I use LibreOffice for all my spreadsheets (LO Calc) and for relatively simple word processing (LO Writer), but I have never been able to master LO's Style system for complicated text documents. Little things in Style, OK, but the complicated ones are just painful.
I am writing what will be a short book on my family's genealogy and using Corel WordPerfect for this. As you say, Reveal Codes is such a great solution to controlling the format of a page and for finding inconsistencies and conflicts in the layout of a document. Critics can say what they like about WordPerfect but for intuitiveness I believe that it cannot be beaten. I know, I know, open source is The Way To Go, and LibreOffice is great for that and I continue to use it for many things. But for my book I have chosen WordPerfect and have not regretted it.
I think it is still used widely in the legal profession as well (think Templates!).

Still can't beat Reveal Codes in WP
